Stepping Out of The Comfort Zone

The platform in this photograph was being constructed at Serpent’s Lair on the island of Inis Mor during our Ireland visit in 2014. The diving platform sits 27 meters or 88.58 feet above the water above a naturally occurring blowhole that is almost a perfect rectangle and one of the locations of the Red Bull cliff diving tournament. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, established in 2009 is an annual international series of cliff diving events in which a limited number of competitors determine the Cliff Diving World Series winner. Divers jump from a platform at a height ranging from 26–28 meters (85–92 feet). The site would be used only a day or two after our visit by divers hoping to win the clipping diving championship.

Blogging was a cathartic part of dealing with a very harrowing time in my life when my wife became the living donor for my son (her stepson) when he needed a liver transplant.

Although the courage it takes to move overseas to work is nothing compared to that of a cliff diver or risking your life to save another’s, writing about our story helps me to reflect on the journey and to remember why we embarked upon it in the first place.

Each person must decide what for them constitutes a comfort zone and what, if anything, might drive them to step out of it.

“A ship is always safe at the shore – but that is NOT what it is built for.” – Albert Einstein
